For All My Friends: A Wish for '09

I choose my multiply contacts ever so carefully for it is here, more than anywhere else, that I open my public self up.  I only agree to a request or make one myself if I consider a certain person important enough to share a part of my life and in turn share his or hers.

And so this greeting is from the deepest part of my heart, although it is entirely lifted out of an email message from a dear, dear friend, and I sent it out to express my eternal gratefulness for all of you. A toast to a new year with all its peaks, plains, and valleys!

* Dear friends,

* Wishing you a New Year filled with good health, new hope and new beginnings!

* May year 2009 open up for you more opportunities, lead you onto the path of continued success, happiness, abundant LOVE and prosperity!

* My family wishes ... that the coming year showers on you all that you ever wished for!

* Good luck, good cheer, good health and...

A Happy New Year!

Revolution This Coming Year, A Possibility?

Note: Hopefully, this entry would somehow become an expansion of one of my replies to Mr. Andy Huang's blog entry.

The contents of this has been in incubation for quite some time.  It is not made at 7 am or even at 5 am. And I just want to jot down a random thought or two on the matter so that I can expound on them eventually or never at all.

Here goes:

There are those (mostly Marxists) who place our period in history as belonging to "late capitalism". They predict that the present world order, which is based on capitalism, is about to implode. See more of this in works such as Frederic Jameson's "Postmodernism: the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism"

When I witnessed what was beginning to happen in the US, particularly the start of the economic downturn early or middle of this year, I said to myself, "Hey, what they are saying seems to be coming to reality." Subsequent worldwide events seemed to reinforce their predictions. At the same time, however, I cannot think of a system that can replace the status quo.

Probably, there is a need to again modify societal setups, as had been done in the course of recent history, for example, by incorporating some socialist ideals, which turned out to be more humane, into total and outright capitalism, but an overhaul seems improbable. The History Channel, in fact, mentioned that capitalism, is an improvement, not an overturning of feudalism. At present, I cannot think of a country or society that is trying out, somehow experimenting, on something entirely new or different, at least one that we can pattern as to what is to be the next order of things.

The old kind of communism, as interpreted and implemented in several countries, is not the answer.  It is a system, as had been proven in those countries, that is far less accomodating and adaptable, and thus more destructive than capitalism.

Or maybe, what we can do is something of a touch and go which at certain times in history has helped mankind a lot.

What is in store for us this coming New Year?  Maybe, and I pray for this, our lot, while still within the status quo will improve but we cannot be certain. As a matter of fact, noone can be certain of anything, even feng shui experts that proliferate during this time of the year on tv, and so I recommend to myself that Filipino saying:

kung maikli ang kumot, matutong mamaluktot
or better
kahit mahaba ang kumot, lagi tayong mamaluktot.

I've Had a Facelift

Boredom led or better forced me to restudy creating customized multiply themes.

I have not been particularly satisfied with what other multiply users have made since they do not speak to me.  It's true that some of them are unbelievably breathtaking, but they do not reflect my personality.

And so, more than a year ago, I self-studied the process of customizing themes in multiply albeit a minor part of it, i.e. inserting images.  The result was a site appearance that is dark, angry, and even frightening, but I liked it. It bore Thor, which newly revived comic series I started to collect.  Also, I felt that the design appealed to my evilish, brutish side.

Unlucky for me however, I soon got tired of the design and so I tried to manipulate the details of the CSS I used for it. It turned out that I totally forgot the process and so I ended up in actually destroying my first creation.  I tried looking for the link that helped me in my original study, but I can no longer find it.

And so, I was forced to import an entire customized theme, the one that bore the Ironman which after a few months suddenly inexplicably disappeared.  I was forced then to use one of the relatively boring and overused base themes of multiply.  Until today...

I finally got the time to browse through various links that retaught me the process of manipulating the CSS.  And after a few experiments, I came up with the present design that showcases a better looking and therefore bearing a nearer resemblance to yours truly, Thor. (Sorry, I can't help it.)

It is no great feat since more can be learned and therefore done to a particular site if a CSS layot is deciphered, but, I am the one who made it.  And barring any infringement rights lawsuit, I am planning to hold on to this for a long time.

Until, of course, I find a better design as well as the time to create a new one.

Batong-bato

Hindi slow mo; stand still talaga.

Pride and Prejudice

Rating:★★★★
Category:Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Jane Austen
I've been meaning to read this novel since I saw a film adaptation of it a few years back. I am glad that the Christmas break finally afforded me some free time to go through an old copy of the novel which I found in our school's library (so old that it bears "Kuang Chi School Library" in some of its pages.)

The film woke up the romantic in me and the book, to my satisfaction did it again albeit in a more comprehensive way. How I long for a companion who could approximate, if not equal the character of Ms. Bennet.

THE Party

Why can I not leave Xavier? One can find a part of the answer in these pictures.

All these pictures are taken before the "big" announcement by Fr. Johnny.

Thank you XSPA and the Admin for this afternoon as well as the wonderful new year's gift.

On Focus: High 1G and 1H

From Lam-Ang to their own Kuwentong Bayan. I am so amazed with the talents of my students in first year. I can't imagine what they'll accomplish when they setup real plays for the One Act Play in H4. The performances, however, can be informed in so many ways, but given the limitations of time and inputs, they have what I can term as fantastic dula-dulaan.

XmaS Program feat the MRX

After the Agape, teachers, admin, and students participate in a Christmas Program that features among others the MRX (Most Requested in Xavier.) It is part of the Christmas Drive program of the school wherein the students and teachers and everybody else in the community can vote for the educators whom they want to perform during the program. Each vote is worth a peso. One of my most memorable experiences in Xavier is to have become part of MRX Christmas 2006 considering that I became a part of the community for only a few weeks.

The fund raised from this is given to institutions that Xavier, as a caring academic community, is committed to serve.

An add-on this year is that the class who was able to pledge the biggest part of their allowance gets to choose a wild card--anybody they want--to perform.

Not a Party

It is an agape. One of the things I like about Xavier is that it does give in to the commercialization of this event that we call Christmas.

This one is with the class that I am a mentor-1G. Some pictures are of my other class-1H. Both are fun and intelligent classes.

Dept's XmaS Gift Giving

I got my very first major gifts: a planner and a xmas decor as I have asked for on our wish list. Fun fun fun night at Gerry's Grill - Promenade

An Invitation to Speak Your Mind

On The Reproductive Health Bill.

I am blogging about this so that my friends, as well as contacts, if they wish, and I can express our views and actually discuss about,  as I found out today, a very sensitive and multifaceted issue: the reproductive health bill.

I was dragged into a debate about this topic which I have been avoiding both in learning more about it, i.e. the actual content of the bill, the specific stand of the church vis-a-vis the bill, and the points of view of other people particularly those who do not consider themselves part of the church, and of course in really reflecting and formulating my stand on the matter.

Before today, my deepest involvement on the issue was shallowly limited to helping a former student find references for his research paper on the topic for the Ateneo's English 12.  I led him to the website of the Varsitarian of the UST and its inflammatory dismissal of both the fourteen professors of the Ateneo and the institution itself and by extension the Jesuits, and to a book by Bishop Ted Bacani on the bill, ironically a reading material which as a freebie I received with disappointment and resentment during the San Jose Alumni Homecoming.

I know the basic stand of the church: protect human life.

And this protection does not merely extend from the moment of conception, meaning making sure nothing hinders the meeting of the sperm and egg cells of any woman or man except their discipline and will nor that once the cells begin the process of becoming a zygote something would destroy it, i.e. abortion.

The protection of human life means ascertaining that a person will indeed be conceived, born, live, develop, die, and interred in the best possible social context--where best is to be understood, at the very least, as a situation fit for a human being.  That, for me is the extent of the church's desire to protect human life; in all its forms and in all its functions, human life is of the utmost importance.  This is where the opposition of the church against the bill is rooted on.

From what I gather from my two "opponents" today, the stand of those who are supporting the bill partially rests on the view that the church's reasoning belongs to medieval times.  The church (as if the church are the church leaders) do not care to understand the flight of the poor and how to live with many children while in a constant state of hunger and that it has not studied the matter thoroughly.  It also does not care to listen to other positions, particularly that of the minority. Instead, the church is resorting to a limited and therefore narrow view of democracy as the rule of the majority when it seeks to influence national policy makers through the signature campaign.

Everybody, my self-professed social liberal (not social progressive, he was quick to add, as if there are any other kind) and communist-feminist friends say, is using contraception nowadays and that because the Philippines does not have legal structures of any form to regulate the sexual practices of many citizens, AIDS is on the rise.  The two of them also say that there is no evidence that some artificial means of contraception is abortifacient and that Thailand is much better off than we are because their society is free from moral inhibitions.  The Thais, they claim has lesser incidence of AIDS. I ask therefrom if there are definite statistical studies supporting this claim.

My liberated friend said that all he wants now is that the government reach a consensus or as he said a secular stand and not just to follow the desire of the majority who are incidentally catholics since that is the essence of democracy.  He proudly proclaims that it would not do for our society not follow what they do in their school, as if this school is a perfect school and that he is an integral part of its system, where they reach a compromise agreement and only divide the house when this process fails.

I was not prepared nor looked for a debate this morning and so at first I listened to them start off against the church's stand but soon I did not anymore stop myself from stating my views, for I cannot, for the life of me, let the two of them malign the position of the church and the church herself while I do what many catholic filipinos do when their church is questioned: keep quiet and watch.

In my eyes, the church has kept relatively quiet for so long about so many issues for various reasons, her apologetical mission set aside for more urgent concerns.  And when I say the church, I talk about the whole body not just the leaders. It is because of this that I did not let this morning's tirades pass.

To be continued... But as of now, if you want, post your comments and stand on the matter. I need to understand this issue more.

Christmas Gifts

Mr. and Mrs. Jaypee and Mimi Barias

My very first Xavier colleague wedding. I am looking forward to a few more.

I was late to witness the vows because our MA class extended into 4:30 pm, but not for the photo ops and of course the banquet.

The event had an informal and relaxed atmosphere around it. These are characteristics that are missing in too many weddings.

Busy, Dizzy, Groggy

These are not the names of Snow White's three new dwarfs nor of Cinderella's.  These, however, are modifiers with which I can describe myself the past week.  And I was not aware of them until this morning when sheer exhaustion brought me 11 hours sleeping time.

I realized yesterday evening that since Saturday, the 6th of December, I haven't had a full night sleep. It's because I have to attend to all my roles: son, uncle, teacher, colleague, and student.

I went home to Cabanatuan the night of that Saturday after attending my MA class at the Ateneo to witness Mommy's installation as the regent of DMII Kapitan Pepe for the second year.

I had to leave early morning of the 8th, Monday to be at Xavier with the High 4 students who were in school to practice for their Play Festival.

I also had to find time to write my quota of LT questions for our High 1 team, as well as my classes on that year level's last quiz and summative quiz.  For the H4 Advanced, I prepared a quiz on the H4 plays, hunted down the script of the play that I wanted for their LT, scanned it, drafted the test questions based on it; and printed out the 16 page last reading for this quarter.

The H4 play festival also made me busy.  I planned the flow of the program, wrote a script for it, looked for emcees and performers for the intermission, coordinated with the three teachers in charge of the Regular-Advanced fused sections and borrowed the necessary equipments for the program.

On top of these, I was preparing for a group report for my MA class yesterday.

Lightheartedly, I now begin another week.  I had a good night out last Friday, I witnessed an enchanting wedding of a colleague, the plays based on the H4 Advanced three story lines won 1st, 2nd 3rd in the play festival, my classes with the first year were riotously funny, the quiz and LT questions were intelligent, at the very least; I saw a good movie and our report was well researched and therefore, well-received.

It was a whirlwind of a week, but in the final analysis, I enjoyed being in the midst of it!

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Mystery & Suspense
I knew nothing about the film and it turned out to be a good thing.

The cinemas have been churning out bad movies after the other these past few weeks. I was a victim of "Bolt" and the reviews of my friends was a last minute save from "Twilight." And so I wanted to stay away from the theaters even only up until the MMFF is finished. Last night however, I was craving for a movie. I need to escape to a new world and reward myself for finishing another subject for my MA. So I went to Robinson's, now my fave movie place.

There was nothing new in the line up except for this film. "Twilight" tempted me to see for myself how bad it is. A lady friend mentioned to me a long way back that "Four Christmasses" is delightful. But chick flicks have burned me many times. "Bolt" and even "Quantum of Solace" are still being shown and two independent films. Then there was this movie which I was not really planning to see and indeed was dreading to see because I was put off by its trailers and the loooooong title. But I need to give in to my craving.

And so...

The movie has its valleys and peaks. Acting valleys first. Keanu Reeve's one dimensional facial expression. However, it is forgivable since his character is not supposed to be human and all. Besides I am used to it courtesy of the Matrx Trilogy. Acting peaks are many: the son of Will Smith (yata,) Jaden Smith is unbelievable. Watch out for the part when his character resolves his conflicts Then there is Jennifer Conneley and the ever delightful "Dolores Clairborne" and "Misery" lady Kathy Bates.

Valleys of the storyline. The character of Keanu Reeves wasn't fully fleshed out (maybe because only his body is flesh) or even at time contadictory although the film provided enough details for one to form his or her own conclusions about him. Then the resolution of the film is quite deus ex machinaist to me. Besides, many Filipinos would probably not like the ending and some of the lines.

However, and here comes the peaks, the story has some, nay many surprises and twists not the least of all is its premise. I can hear myself and some members of the audience saying, "Oo nga naman" in many revelation parts.

There were two times in the film when I was made to say, I wish that would happen: that we be brought to a precipe and that the earth stand still.

Turns out the film is a remake. Maybe because a genuis in Hollywood thought, maybe it is now time people ask again the questions that this film's audiences many years ago asked albeit on an entirely different context and set of issues.

Guro Forever

Nakakatawa at nakakatuwa.

Ituturing ka pa rin nilang ala fountain of all knowledge and seat of wisdom.

Tulad ngayon, nagre-research ako tungkol sa RH bill at heroism from the filipino point of view.

Xavier Batch 2009 Play Production

I was able to borrow a camera from home last weekend and decided to use it in documenting the final preparations of Batch 2009 for the play festival today. As I have not mastered wholesale uploading into multiply, I am posting the pixs piecemeal. So I hope, by the time I finish, every class will be well represented. I am amazed on how the plays were all well made.

I have no pictures of the actual play as I was busy coordinating the program. Hopefully, Mr. Cuepo was able to take some good shots.

Many thanks to Jordan Tan and Frank Chua, the Emcees, Stacy (I hope I got his name right) and Stage FX for the additional lights, Ian Go and Audrey Wong, and Ross Tan, Jan Lambert Nery, Joseph Chan, and Timothy Fernando for the impromptu presentations (I twisted their arms to perform and they did very well.)

The batch has so much artistic talent. And syemps kudos to my co-teachers who were able to draw them out in full today!

Dress Rehearsals ABC

Impressive!

The three sections that make up the High 4 Advanced Class Filipino had their dress rehearsals today and that was my general reaction to their performances.  Chess pieces, a vision of hell, and the imaginings of a disturbed student came to life in our classroom which newspapers taped on the windows transformed into a badly lit cramped theater.

My fear of snafus happening left and right proved to be unfounded.  The plays have finally taken on forms and meanings which the mind (at least mine!) can perceive and grapple with.

There are a few more things to improve on and the groups have a day to fix them.  So good luck to my students in the final group presentations tomorrow.  A larger group, and presumably a more objective audience will be assessing their creations.

I'm an Uncle (Thrice Over)

Our family welcomes the birth of our newest member: the son of my brother Jason and his beloved, Rhoda. As of now, I still do not know the name they have chosen for the child.  But he is my first nephew, my mom and dad's first male grandchild.

He is born in Dubai, UAE, where my brother and sis in law have been working for several years now.  I really am not worried about them since they have a very strong and well-knit community of Filipinos there.

I am happy that my mother is able to witness this day.  Now my wish is that my nephew grows up guided physically by my mom since she is sick and in pain almost everyday now.

A Poem

Kumpisal
ni Stanly Sy, H4B

Sa isang confessional box sa Mary the Queen Parish.

Fader,

Magandang araw ho.
Bibilisan ko na lang ho,
Baka kasi masyado Kayong
Abala't may
gagawin pa Kayo.

Ito po ang aking mga kasalanan:

Patawad po't ganito lang
Ang ayos ko.
Na alikabok lamang ang
Maipampupulbos
Sa mukha ko.
Na di man lang Green Cross
Ang magamit para
Matanggal ang alingasaw
Ng katawan ko.
Na kuto, at hindi
Gel o pomada,
Ang nagpapatayo
Sa buhok ko.
Na mas nakikinabang pa
Ang nabubusog na surot
Kaysa sa akin dito
Sa suot ko.

Ipagpaumanhin po Ninyo
Ang ayos ko.

Patawad po't hindi ko po
Naipalaglag
Ang ikaanim kong anak.
Papunta na po kasi
Kami sa doktor
Kaso natrapik po kami't
Bumigay na sa dyip
Ang misis ko.
Pananatilihin ko na
Lang po siyang payat
Para naman ho
Hindi kami lalong
Padagdag sa pagkakasikip
Dito.

Ipagpaumanhin Ninyo
Ang anak ko.

Patawad po't iisang santo
Na lang ang
Natatandaan ko.
Si San Miguel ho.
Siya lang naman kasi
Ang nakakapansin
Sa katulad ko.
Patawad rin po kung
Kara y krus
O tong-its lamang
ang maipamamana ko
Sa 'king mga anak
Dahil ito lamang
Ang aking tanging yaman.

Ipagpaumanhin po Ninyo
Ang bisyo ko.

Patawad po't di ko pa
Ipinapahuli
Si Big Boy
Siya lang ho kasi
Ang nakapagbibigay
ng trabaho kay Magdalena.
Wala na kasi siyang
Mapasukang trabaho
Kaya kama na lang ang
Kanyang opisina't
Siya ang pinapasukan.

Ipagpaumanhin Ninyo
Ang asawa ko.

Patawad po at nasibak
Ako sa trabaho
Hindi raw po kasi
Magagamit ang mga
Di nakapag-aral tulad ko.
Kaya binebentahan ko
Na lang ng pampalipas
Iyung kapitbahay kong
Laging tuliro't tulala
Para may makain man lang
Ang pamilya ko.

Ipagpaumanhin po Ninyo
Ang trabaho ko.

Patawad po at kailangan
Ko lang talagang makita
kayo nang harap-harapan

Mabilis lang po talaga...
Mabilis lang po.

Fader,

Ipagpaumanhin ninyo
ang gagawin Ko.

Stanly created this poem for our advanced class in Filipino last year: 2007-2008.  My colleagues at the Filipino Department deemed it worthy to be part of the PAASCU exhibit of the department. In my eyes, it is a good poem.  I am proud of it and thankful for the appreciation given by the likes of G. Cuepo.  I hope the reader would also appreciate at the very least the effort behind it.

As part of the requirement, Stanly further wrote:

May Stanly and my other students continue their love affair with literature while finding the true love of their lives.

Transcript of Obama's Victory Speech

I want to save this speech not for its aesthetic value but for its historical significance.   Unlike a certain friend, it did not move me to shed tears nor did the fact that Obama-an African-american is elected president of the US made me say "wooot."

I am too realistic or pessimistic for those for I see that this may be the worst time in history for a black person to become the president of the US.

It is not that I doubt the capabalities of Barack because he is partly African descent.  It is of people blaming this fact if ever either the situation in the Middle East or the financial crisis get worse that I am wary of.  Then what will happen next if Barack is to been as a failure?  How hard would the backlash be.

Let me take now the stance I always take when faced with situations beyond me: wait and see.

Remarks of President-Elect Barack Obama-as prepared for delivery
Election Night
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008
Chicago, Illinois

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain.  He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves.  He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine, and we are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.  I congratulate him and Governor Palin for all they have achieved, and I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on that train home to Delaware, the Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden

I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama.  Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House.  And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am.  I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics - you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements.  Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause.  It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth.  This is your victory.

I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me.  You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead.  For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.  Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.  There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor's bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long.  Our climb will be steep.  We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there.  I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts.  There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can't solve every problem.  But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face.  I will listen to you, especially when we disagree.  And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change.  And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.  It cannot happen without you.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other.  Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long.  Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress.  As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection." And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand.  To those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you.  To those who seek peace and security - we support you.  And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America - that America can change.  Our union can be perfected.  And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations.  But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta.  She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed:  Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot.  Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose.  Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved.  Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome."  Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination.  And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change.  Yes we can.

America, we have come so far.  We have seen so much.  But there is so much more to do.  So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see?  What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call.  This is our moment.  This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

Yes We Can.  Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

Win Or Lose..... A Commentary on La Salle

This forwarded email starts with:

hmmm ...this has been going around.  see you at the bonfire.

(btw neither did DLSZ claim their 3rd prize trophy at the awarding
ceremonies last saturday.  as if their school rep to the uaap was unaware of
the schedule of activities...)

all the best,

joel

The main message starts here:

THE REASON WHY LA SALLIANS (la sallites, archers, green mob, idiots)  CANNOT UNDERSTAND (among countless other things) OUR PHRASE--
"WIN OR LOSE IT'S THE SCHOOL WE CHOOSE"
IS BECAUSE THEY ONLY KNOW "WIN OR WIN OR FORGET IT"
AS DEMONSTRATED BY THEIR SNOBBING OF THE UAAP  AWARDING/MEDAL CEREMONY FOR 2ND PLACE.

CALL THAT SCHOOL PRIDE?
IT WAS A HUGE SCHOOL EMBARASSMENT! !

PRIDE IS WHEN YOU ARE BIG ENOUGH TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND APPLAUD
THE VICTORIOUS AND NOT STAND THERE  SHAKING YOUR HEAD AS THE WINNING TEAM SINGS THEIR ALMA MATER (AS IN THE CASE OF MAIERHOFFER) .

PRIDE IS WHEN YOU ARE IN TEARS WITH YOUR LOSING TEAM ( AS WITH THE JC/MACKY/DOUG FAREWELL) AND WHEN YOU THANK YOUR GRADUATING PLAYERS FOR THEIR YEARS OF EFFORT INSPITE OF DEFEAT
( AS WITH FORD & ZION).....  IT IS NOT IN WALKING AWAY AND HIDING IN THE DUGOUT AS WITH POOR GRADUATING CAPTAIN
JAYVEE CASIO NOT RECEIVING THE TEAM TROPHY AND MEDAL FOR HIS LAST PLAYING YEAR AND BEING GIVEN ONE LAST ANIMO CHEER.

BUT WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU HAVE A COACH WHO SAYS "AFTER
9 YEARS OF BEING IN A CHAMPIONSHIP I'VE NEVER SEEN WORSE OFFICIATING"
(in those 9 years, has it ever ever been completely fair for either side???...welcome to the real world!)... MAIERHOOFER PROBABLY LEADS THE LEAGUE'S STATISTICS FOR TRASHTALKING AND JUST GOT AWAY WITH IT...UNTIL NOW.

PUMAREN TALKS ABOUT HOW HIS PLAYERS COULD NOT DELIVER WITH THE OFFENSE AND TALKS ABOUT WHAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DO
. ...BUT DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE HOW THE EAGLES SIMPLY OUTPLAYED THEM
WITH SUPERIOR DEFENSE AND HOW NORMAN JUST OUTSMARTED HIM BY SHUFFLING HIS BENCH BETTER THAN HE DID...AND IN THE END JUST SHRUGS BLACK OFF BY SAYING HE STILL HAS ONE MORE UAAP VICTORY THAN ATENEO.

WIN OR WIN..... THAT'S THE TYPE OF PRIDE THEY INSTILL OUT THERE-- THE PRIDE OF ARROGANCE, SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS AND VICTORY.

THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE ROOKIES LIKE L.A. REVILLA FLASHING DISGRACEFUL GUN-FINGERS AND LAUGHING  AT FEU PLAYER MAC BARACAEL IN THE FINAL 4 (AS SEEN ON YOU TUBE).... INSTEAD OF ACKNOWLEDGING THE INJURED PLAYER'S BRAVE COMEBACK AFTER BEING SHOT.

 WE STAND ON A HILL....
THE PLACE WHERE EAGLES BELONG.
TO BE CLOSER TO MARY OUR PATRONESS,
WHERE WIN OR LOSE WE STAND BY OUR PLAYERS, OUR TEAM AND OUR SCHOOL.

WHERE VICTORY IS SWEETER BECAUSE IT IS A LONG ROAD OF HARDWORK, PATIENCE AND MOST OF ALL,  OF FAITH.  WHERE BELIEVING MEANS STANDING BY YOUR GUYS THROUGH THICK AND THIN, BAD CALLS,AND ALL--
EVEN IF IT TAKES 5 LONG YEARS.

ARCHERS WIN BY PIERCING AT THE HEART WITH ARROWS
WHILE EAGLES SOAR WITH THEIR HEARTS.

AND THAT MY DEAR FRIENDS IS WHY PEOPLE STEP ON THE GREEN GRASS BELOW AND LOOK UP TO THE BLUE HEAVENS ABOVE.

Akin: Kaya sa Ateneo talaga ako.

A VacAtion DAY to Remember

Teachers' Day today in Xavier.

My second.

I do not know why I am affected more by this event than last year's.

There was this celebratory mood in the school. It started with the plane-ride-welcome-to-your-dream-vacation theme of the whole affair this morning and it continued into the overwhelmingly full of talents program in the afternoon.

AM and noontime showcased a touching and heartwarming welcome at the "airport," leis, a special bonding time between mentors and students in the classroom, a delightful program of the students at the gym, and a luncheon with Chinese and Filipino looking "Italians" in striped suits serving us delicious food that allows for second servings and bottomless iced tea.

Wonderful add ons to the package were being serenaded with soothing acoustic and classical music and singing during lunch and surprise dessert in the form of notes from the students attached to a personalized clipboard (Diego handed mine to me).

The images that I would carry in mind are the singing of the Glee Club at the "airport" (I had "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"), the fun games in the classroom where contrary to the usual set up, our students led the activities (my team lost in the games but we fought hard!), Noah's ang sakit sa tiyan hosting, Dance X's performance (shark! shark!), Francis Apostol dancing (in bloody red and with roses in hand) and Jan Lambert Ney emceeing (this guy's not only good in writing in Filipino), and the greetings from former students albeit given in general.  I particularly remember Jake's at his flat, Tong-fu's before the merlion, Pierre's in UP (I think), CY's at the Ateneo Caf (parang), Evan and Gino's at Times Square. I was amazed by how far my students had gone to in so short a time.

Personal greetings from former students were also given by Stanly through text, Rod through a note, and Kenn through the multiply.  Co-teachers Andrew also sent a text message and Kevin and Toshi through the multiply.

Verbal greetings were given by so many people.

Thank you Xavier.

ADM 102: Introduction to Ateneo-La Salle Games

I do not really take the Ateneo-La Salle Basketball rivalry seriously, but I jump on the bandwagon every now and then.  This blog entry that I have taken from Dra. Soto's email is an example.

ADM 102: Introduction to Ateneo-La Salle Games

Thu/Sat/Sunday, 4:00 PM, Araneta Coliseum
Course Prepared by: Miguel Lizada
Course Instructor: TBA

Course Description

The course introduces the student-cheerer to the dynamics and principles of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry. The course employs both theoretical and application dimensions. The theoretical phase exposes the student to the history of the rivalry, the tradition of cheering, the construction of the ideal Atenean 6th Man, and other theoretical concepts.

The application phase on the other hand requires the student to put into practice all the theoretical principles. These practices include, among others: effective skills in lining up for the games, cheering (pre-game, during the game, half-time and post-game), jeering, heckling, creating effective posters and banners for one's favorite players and posing and smiling for Fabilioh.com.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student should have been able to:

Course Requirements

Written Long Test: This will assess your memorization of the tradition and history of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry. The test consists of itemized Multiple Choice questions and True or False statements.

Oral Exam:
The student will randomly draw two cheers from a lot. The student must cheer/sing the cheers he picked. Afterwards, he must be able to explain the significance of the cheer/song. He must also be able to identify when these cheers/songs are used.

Practical Exam:
The student must line up for tickets. This is a pass or fail exam. If the student is able to acquire a ticket, he automatically gets an A. If he doesn't get any ticket, he must take the Make-Up Test.

Make-up Test: Negotiating with Scalpers. Students who wish to pass the first practical exam for the course but failed to do so must take the Make-Up test. The student must locate a scalper within the vicinity of Araneta Coliseum. This is not a pass or fail test. The student's grade depends on how he was able to acquire a good ticket with the lowest possible price. The better the ticket with lower ticket price, the higher the grade.

Final Exam: Students are required to cheer during the game. The grade depends on the voice quality and frequency of the cheering. The Ateneo standard grading system will be applied. Therefore the passing score for the Final Exam is 70%. Students who cannot stand up and cheer 70% of the time automatically fail the exam.

Bonus points are given to students who are able to convince others to cheer loudly, either through a well-articulated speech or forceful coercion. Extra points are also awarded to fans who make creative banners for their favorite players.

Written Long Test: 20%
Oral Exam: 20%
Practical Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 40%

Course Policies and Other Reminders

1. Plagiarism. Plagiarism is an extreme offense in this school. Do not copy cheers from other schools.
2. Cellphone Use. Using your cellphone to place in bets is illegal. Do not get yourself into trouble.
3. Cuts. Once you are inside Araneta, you are not allowed to leave. You must watch all four quarters. Win or lose, you are not allowed to leave before the Song for Mary is sung. Doing so merits an automatic W for the course.

It is Hell!

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
Nothing new, nothing exciting, nothing to watch out for in this movie. The first movie (Hellboy 1) had an intriguing draw to it but not this one. The characters are never threathened in such a way that the viewing becomes engrossing. The visuals are an aside not really a part of the film, unlike Pan's Labyrinth of the same director.

I had the bad luck of watching it at Promenade. Sayang ang pera.

Death Race

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
Has the visual quality of a B movie. However, for someone who just needs to watch and forget about reality, analysis and criticism, this movie is a treat.

I think, this is a better site than wikipedia. Just add the term you're searching for to the last slash and press "enter" on the keyboard. Very comprehensive, though, so there is still the need for the intelligent reader to separate the rubbish from the treasure.

AV Book 4 (Last)

Rating:★★★
Category:Books
Genre: Comics & Graphic Novels
Author:Steve T. Seagle, Cloonan, Rugg
I coughed up 900 bucks to complete my collection of this series. I then spent about an hour reading the work. I came out of the whole experience badly bruised.

It is anti-climactic to say the least. Nothing happened. And maybe because we are in a post-modern world, the protagonist's mission has to end in failure and in _ _ _ _ _ (I do not want to be a total spoiler).

Looking back at the whole, I can say that the excitement in the story-telling ended in the second part. Those in the third and fourth are possibly solely money-making ventures. Maybe the publishers are saying "We can't let go of a good idea that has intruiging premise as its foundation! Let us make more! There are people like that Jules Hernando whole fall into our trap!"

It seems to me that my only consolation now is that I have collection. That AV is now complete and I learned what is at its end.

I have so far completed two comic book series; the AV and Shazam!. And I am not very satisfied with my choices. I hope, Bone does not leave me feeling robbed too. The same goes to Thor.

I (Used to) Hate Kids Since They'll Grow Up Eventually

Within two months, I'll be an uncle thrice over.

I am excited for my brother, Jason and my sister-in-law, Rhoda.  This will be their first baby.  I was reading Rhoda's blog on pregnancy and the fact that Filipinos abroad still hold on to beliefs or superstitions about pregnancies even though they are in another country and even in a predominantly Muslim state such as UAE.  The things she enumerated are kind of funny.  My opinion on the matter is that there is no harm in following them.

There is a possibility that their child would be a boy.  If this will be the case, theirs would be my first nephew. A few weeks ago, Jason sought my help to think of or suggest a good name for a baby boy since their prepared name is for a girl.  Guess what, I could not think of anything.  Even until now. Not that I am racking my brains over the matter. Or maybe, I just fear that I might suggest an ugly name, then my brother falls for it and my nephew would end up hating me for the rest of his life.

Anyhow, the title of this blog would be "kid" if I only mentioned one.  So, here is another. Yesterday, I met a long lost inaanak or godchild.  His name is Abram Joseph. The last time I saw him was when he was in diapers and needs to be carried around.  In fact, it was a few months after he was born.  He is now in shorts and he can walk on his own. No, no. Not just walk, let me correct myself on that point--he can now do taekwondo for he is now seven years old!

Oh boy, time really just flies!

Speaking of time flying, my two nieces, Naya and Aysha are growing up so fast. The former is now ten years and has read 12 of the 13 SUE (Series of Unfortunate Events) novels, all the Harry Potter Books, volumes of Nancy Drews, and other printed materials.  She is gobbling up books.  This is some sort of a mea culpa for me since I was the one who would lend her some of those I mentioned above ('cept the Nancy Drews, that's her mom's). And so to put a bit of "normalcy" into my inaanak/niece's life, I introduced her to comic books. We are now into the fourth volume of Bone.

Meanwhile, little 6 year-old Aysha is discovering reading, drawing and painting, violin playing, and making herself pretty.  She can dress herself up like Polly pockets I give her as gift.  But, she is no girly girl.  In fact, she is a lot to handle because she is soooo active.  She does taekwondo, runs and jumps around a lot.  But she's quite malambing too.  When I arrive at their place to visit, she would say: "Ninoooong" although it is Jason who is her real ninong.  Of the two, she is the one who asks my hand for mano and loves to sit on my lap.

Haaay, with these kids, do I really need my own?

The Clone Wars

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Animation
This movie is breathtaking and it is a joy to watch. I cannot say that there is a dull moment in the film. At first, I thought that giving a Padawan to Anakin would make the film a bit mushy and a bit Karate Kiddish but no. Making the Star Wars animated opened it up to so many possibilities in terms of what can be shown on the big screen. I wanna watch it again.

Unwanted Long Weekend

A long weekend at any other period of the school year is a welcome respite for me as a teacher and as a student.

A long weekend at the start of the school year is unacceptable, unpleasant, and unwanted.

I hope, however, that this is not the last.

Incredible! Hulk

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
Do not make comparisons between this movie and the first one. Instead, make an effort to evaluate it on its own merits and you would end up being satisfied with this new film about the Hulk. There is an attempt to make it a sequel to the first one although new actors are playing the lead parts. I like Edward Norton and Liv Tyler as well as the actor that plays Banner's main nemesis. The Hulk has also been portrayed in a setting that is darker perhaps to hide the inadequacies of potraying him in CGI.

Nothing Happened: The Happening

Rating:★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Mystery & Suspense
There are parts that are engaging but generally, the movie is disappointing. In the end, when everything that happened was explained, you would feel that you have been taken for a ride.

It's a good thing I watched it at an SM cinema. My Advantage Card gave me a ten peso discount to a ticket that is already relatively cheap compared to Robinson's and Promenade.

Shyamalan definitely cannot duplicate his The Sixth Sense feat. He's no next Steven Spielberg. Do not attempt to find out on your own by watching this film.

Unang Linggo

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Animation
I have never heard audiences laugh out so long, so loud, so hard, and so often inside a movie theater. The movie's plot may not be that original for those of us who watched Jackie Chan's early films or the Karate Kid series of the 80s but this movie is a must see on the big screen for its comedy and its action scenes. One will surely fall in love with one or two of the characters in the end.

Do this: stay until the very last part of the credits, there is a footage there that may be an "awwww moment" for some.

Downside: Sam Concepcion's take on Kung Fu Fighting is used in the end.

Prince Caspian: For Aslan!

Rating:★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Action & Adventure
