I've been meaning to read this novel since I saw a film adaptation of it a few years back. I am glad that the Christmas break finally afforded me some free time to go through an old copy of the novel which I found in our school's library (so old that it bears "Kuang Chi School Library" in some of its pages.)
The film woke up the romantic in me and the book, to my satisfaction did it again albeit in a more comprehensive way. How I long for a companion who could approximate, if not equal the character of Ms. Bennet.
I did the same thing too: after first watching the most recent adaptation (starring Keira Knightly), I found it necessary to read the novel. It's depressing how from something so great, we've come to something like... Twilight. HAHAHA.
TumugonBurahinWhile I don't like the series, I have to say: What an elitist comment.
TumugonBurahinWhat's even worse is that I agree with you. @_@
I haven't touched any of the books belonging to the Twilight series. I'd like to say that it is because I am not the type who goes with the flow but the reality is I just do not have the time for real novels recently. That is why I am so happy to have finished "Pride and Prejudice."
TumugonBurahinIt is funny how many of those who pride themselves with this term fell for so crass a novel as those belonging to the Twilight series.
TumugonBurahinElitism isn't so bad: it can in fact be downright complimentary. It's not always good to identify with or submit to the masses. What's popular isn't always right (and vice-versa) and if everyone jumped off a cliff, after all.
TumugonBurahinThen again, I suppose all things in moderation. Still, I find that elitism with regards to Twilight is quite necessary - more than being bad writing, it's a bad influence too. Considering how influence-prone the target audience is, it becomes bestselling AND dangerous.
I wonder what the "elite" are reading now.
